History of Keystone Lake

A small post office community gave Keystone Lake its name.  The name “Keystone” was derived from the city’s “key” location where the Arkansas and Cimarron Rivers merged.  Located southward was Prue and northward was Mannfor, a shortened version of Mann’s Ford.  The Corps of Engineers placed a levee around the city’s southern and eastern sides to protect the low-lying portions of the city from the river water.
Established in 1834, Camp Arbuckle was one of three outposts in the area created to help protect the Leavenworth Expedition through the Wichita Mountains.  In 1843, Daniel Boone’s son took his troops through this area while on their way to High Plains.  US Marshall Nix, who was a well-known lawman, once chased outlaws in the caves and hills of the Keystone Lake area.
Beginning in December 1956 and finishing in September 1964, the flood control dam was ready for use in bringing electrical energy to the Keystone Lake area by 1968.
